Hidden gems in Puglia: exploring the baroque beauty of Martina Franca and the pottery traditions of Grottaglie
Less well-known than the nearby towns of Alberobello & Locorotondo, Martina Franca is a haven of whitewashed alleys, laundry drying in the breeze and cats napping in sun-drenched streets. You will also find outstanding Baroque Architecture, especially in the town’s beautiful and the most famous of all squares: Piazza Maria Immacolata. This piazza is a grand square framed by semi-circular buildings in the same elaborate style as Martina Franca’s churches. Enjoy a gelato or aperitif under the shaded porticoes, while watching life pass by.
Afterwards, head to Grottaglie, the ceramics capital of Puglia. Since before Roman times, the rich clay of Grottaglie has been utilized for the production of colorful pottery. We will visit the artisan Mimmo in his workshop for an insider’s look into the pottery traditions of the area. We will also visit his private home, an incredible restored property full of history and dating back to the Ancient Greek times.
For lunch, indulge in some delicious seasonal dishes at a local masseria. After lunch our driver will transfer you back to your hotel.
