Santo Spirito, Giovinazzo and Trani: here the daily life of the Apulian fishermen tells the genuine story of the locals. Here you can breathe the fresh air that comes from the sea and feel part of a community. Here we understand why the true roots of the Apulians come from the sea. These are everywhere in the marinas: you can recognize them in the bright colors of the traditional fishing boats anchored in the port of Santo Spirito. Or in the intense aroma of coffee that you sip in front of the enchanting panorama of the port of Giovinazzo kissed by the sun.
The sunset will join you in Trani, where in the afternoon the boats return from fishing. The voices of fishermen and locals blend like vibrant music as they prepare their market on the street. They don't care if you don't know a word in Italian, they help you choose the most delicious fish you have ever eaten before and teach you how to cook the real Pugliese fish soup.
And this is where your last step towards Apulian culture also takes place. South of Trani, before your eyes will reveal a strange massive wooden construction anchored to the rock and stretched out into the sea. This is the Trabucco, an ancient fishing system that requires incredible strength and a precise technique to be used.
Go up, watch the men fishing, take a deep breath and then look at the sea from that special point of view to see the real Apulian roots.
